The Kai apartment is an exercise in fusing high tech with timeless minimalism, both in terms of aesthetics and liefestyle. The challenge was to convert an oversized 1,000 SF 1 bedroom into a 2 bedroom apartment. Smart and multifunctional design was the solution. The first move was to deploy large sliding walls to separate the second bedroom when needed, otherwise allowing the adjacent spaces to borrow light and views from each other. A flexible living condition is created to provide a large family room or a cosy bedroom.
A height adjustable dining table serves as additional counter space or as a standing work surface. Kitchen storage was doubled, and a washer/dryer was introduced as part of a utility closet. At the center of the apartment a home office is concealed behind the sliding wall. On the opposite side a bookcase is revealed when the bedroom door is closed.
In the master bedroom a dresser is buried into the wall out of sight along with a walk in closet with pull down hanging rods. The master bathroom has soft grey tile throughout, and an overhead rainshower with integrated light to create a spa atmosphere. In the second bathroom a soaking tub was added.
This smart-home has lights, shades and music controlled via voice or digital devices. The understated material palette is serene, spaces are uncluttered.
