Wa is an essential principle of Zen aesthetics - harmony, peaceful unity and keeping things clean and clutter-free.
Our Wa project embodies the above principles in a 1600 sf contemporary apartment. A balance between variety and similarity throughout the space with wood furnishings of Walnut, Cherry and Oak contributes to harmony and continuity.
A key goal was to open up the small kitchen and enclosed dining room. Creating a flow between all the spaces and the exterior terraces. A huge amount of storage cabinets was introduced by tripling the kitchen size with a wraparound counter along the windows and a dining room with banquette seating.
For the south terrace with sweeping river views we framed the window opening with deep cabinetry. Providing generous window seating that can be used year round with built in lighting above to cozy up into the evening.
The master bedroom also has a window seat as well as a custom headboard with pull out storage on each side.
The master bath evokes a Japanese Onsen spa with a traditional soaking tub and adjacent shower. Dark tiles throughout are reminiscent of traditional Japanese Shou Sugi Ban, contrasting with the teak wood of the slat ceiling, tub surround, vanity, radiator enclosure and bathroom door.
